This post from The Aspie Mermaid: It’s OK

Dear me…

It’s ok that you don’t like fancy dress.

It’s ok that you would rather live most of your life in your bedroom when you have a whole house at your disposal.

It’s ok that you have to ask you parents for help sometimes.

It’s ok that some days the only social interaction you have is on Twitter.

It’s ok that you don’t like wearing high heels when you’re only 5 ft tall.

It’s ok that your happy place is anywhere that books are.

It’s ok that your dream destination is an isolated log cabin in a forest.

It’s ok that some days you stay in your pyjamas, don’t brush your hair and don’t wear make up.

It’s ok that you secretly rejoice when friends cancel plans.

It’s ok that you don’t enjoy exercise.

It’s ok that you some days you’re super intelligent and other days you can’t string a sentence together.

It’s ok that you never completed college because you just couldn’t handle the social side.

It’s ok that you swear a lot. And sometimes in front of your child.

It’s ok that you can’t help being nice to the people who have hurt you.

It’s ok that you haven’t seen lots of popular films.

It’s ok that you practice conversations with people in your head.

It’s ok that you hate people coming in to your house.

It’s ok that you avoid phone calls.

It’s ok that you remember details that other people don’t.

It’s ok that social interactions can wipe you out.

It’s ok that you don’t have many real life friends.

It’s ok that you sometimes forget that other people don’t think the way that you do.

It’s ok that an 18-30’s type holiday is your idea of hell.

It’s ok that you would rather sit and people-watch than make small talk about the weather.

It’s ok that some days you eat more than one packet of crisps.

It’s ok that you don’t enjoy cooking.

It’s ok that you don’t enjoy sports.

It’s ok that you’re rubbish at maths.

It’s ok that you struggle to tell the time on an analogue clock.

It’s ok that you tried so hard to fit in as a teenager but often got it wrong.

It’s ok that you’ve never had a ‘proper’ relationship.

It’s ok that you would rather watch paint dry than take your daughter to the park.

It’s ok that you don’t like ‘adult cartoons’ eg Family Guy.

It’s ok that you need to hibernate sometimes.

It’s ok that you get fiery and feisty and passionate about things that you care about.

It’s ok that didn’t live up to your academic potential because you chose to try harder at fitting in at school instead.

It’s ok that you hate the whole ‘mum in the school playground’ thing.

It’s ok that you eavesdrop on people’s conversations and internally criticise them for being pointless and meaningless.

It’s ok that you need reminding to put the bins out.

It’s ok that you learnt to use sarcasm, innuendo and a filthy sense of humour as a tool to have conversations with people and appear ‘funny’.

It’s ok that it takes you a few alcoholic drinks to ‘loosen up’ and be less autistic.

It’s ok to be unapologetically YOU.
